Ukrainian officials and Germans deplore Berlin’s offer to Kiev in its moment of crisis, saying weapons are needed rather than protective equipment.

Germany, which refused to supply weapons to Ukraine in light of a possible Russian invasion, on Wednesday offered to send 5,000 helmets instead, a move described as an “absolute joke” by the mayor of Kiev word.

German Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht said the planned delivery would send a “very clear signal” that Germany was standing by Ukraine amid growing tensions with Russia.

But Vitali Klitschko, mayor of Kiev, said the helm offer left him “speechless”.

He accused Germany of not understanding that we were dealing with a highly equipped Russian army that could start invading Ukraine at any moment.

“Five thousand helmets are an absolute joke,” he told the daily Bild. “What will Germany send next? Pillows? ”

The move was also slashed in Germany, with a meme circulating on social media featuring an image of a 2019 campaign encouraging young people to wear cycling helmets, with the slogan: “Looks like s ** t. But save my life. ”

With tens of thousands of Russian troops gathering on the Ukrainian border, fears are mounting that a major conflict could break out in Europe.

Ukraine’s calls to Western allies to strengthen its defensive capabilities led the United States, the United Kingdom and the Baltic states to agree to send weapons, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, to Kiev.

But Germany refused to supply Ukraine with weapons, claiming it would further fuel the conflict.

Defense Minister Lambrecht said earlier this week that Germany would deliver a field hospital to Ukraine, and that Berlin had already provided breathing apparatus.

But Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has condemned Germany for refusing to supply weapons to Kiev, and urged Berlin to stop “undermining unity” and “encouraging Vladimir Putin.”
