In 1949, 70 years old Albert Einstein wrote a message to Glenn Davis, an England-based radar researcher. The subject was not physics or radar – it was birds and bees and the way these animals navigated.

In the letter, Einstein von Frisch described the bee study as “admirable” and suggested that the study of animal perceptions could be hinted at in new physics. It was academic reefing for one alone.
