The world’s food system drives a third of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
Changing diet to not eating meat and dairy may, according to some scientists, be the key to reducing an individual’s effect on the planet’s environment.
A recent report entitled Meat Atlas compiled by various environmental groups found that 20 livestock companies were responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than Germany, the UK or France.
Methane released by cows is only part of the problem, says filmmaker Kip Andersen, producer of the 2014 film Cowspiracy.
“The biggest problem is actually land use,” says Andersen, “90 percent of the maize and soy in the Amazon that is cultivated is all about feeding livestock. And so, what you do is you clean up all these incredible carbon sinks, which are trees, and just destroy them. ”
This week on Front, Marc Lamont Hill talks to filmmaker Kip Andersen about the impact the food industry has on the environment.
