Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says the decision was ‘justified by an extraordinary seriousness of announcements’ made by Australia and the United States.
France said it was recalling its ambassadors to the United States and Australia immediately for consultations after the two countries and Britain signed an agreement terminating a French submarine contract.
Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement on Friday that the decision, at the request of President Emmanuel Macron, “is justified by the extraordinary seriousness of the announcements” made by Australia and the United States.
He said the cancellation by Australia of the contract to buy French conventional submarines in favor of nuclear-powered subs built with American technology was ‘unacceptable behavior’.
