Iran announces a new COVID-19 plan that will restrict some public spaces to those with a digital passport showing that they have been fully vaccinated.

Tehran, Iran – The Iranian government has launched a “smart protocols” plan that will impose some restrictions on those who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, as it aims to teach the country to deal with the coronavirus. ” coexist “.

The plan was launched across the country on Monday, where a fifth deadly wave of the pandemic was brought under control, but concerns remain about another. increase in infections, according to the Ministry of Health.

Participation in activities in indoor public spaces and the use of public transport will depend on obtaining a digital vaccine pass issued by the Ministry of Health.

The pass will be available to those who have been fully vaccinated.

Activities including school attendance, cinema and traveling by plane or bus to other provinces will require a digital pass, the government said.

Residents classified as unvaccinated will still be able to participate in indoor activities if they pass a valid negative PCR test, the government said.

Those who are either unvaccinated or infected and trying to enter cities classified as “red” or “orange” in a weekly updated color-coded map indicating the severity of outbreaks will be fined, according to the Ministry of Roads.

It is also said that penalties were considered for infected citizens leaving their homes during the period of their illness. It remains unclear how the patients should be monitored – as Iran is not involved in widespread contact detection – and how high the fines will be.

The Ministry of Health wants the same protocols to be implemented in city-wide public transport such as metro stations and buses, but it appears that the online infrastructure is not yet in place. More details are expected in the coming weeks.

The national anti-coronavirus task force said last month that a night-time period for vehicles had been scrapped after much deliberation as it was not considered efficient enough. Last month, spectators were also admitted to a football match in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium for the first time in 22 months.

The plan was initially intended to be implemented two weeks ago, but experienced delays as the national vaccine deployment has not achieved its goal. A pilot program was previously implemented in three provinces to identify potential problems.

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health, more than 58 million Iranians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while more than 48 million have been fully vaccinated, at a nationwide rate of nearly 60 percent.

After starting health care workers and then transferring to immunocompromised citizens and those over 60, Iran now offers third doses to those over 40 who received their second dose at least three months earlier.

The rate at which pricks are administered has recently slowed after gaining considerable momentum over the past three months as more pricks were introduced.

The majority of the vaccines imported into Iran were those from China’s Sinopharm, followed by AstraZeneca jabs. Imports were halted in September after the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi said enough doses had been accumulated and production capacity for several locally developed vaccines had increased.

After its first coronavirus deaths were announced in February 2020, Iran recorded the highest number of coronavirus deaths in the Middle East, with more than 130,000 officially registered deaths. The country has recorded more than 6.13 million cases since the start of the pandemic, but officials said actual numbers are likely to be higher.

The fifth wave of infections, fueled by the highly contagious Delta variant, peaked at 709 daily deaths at the end of August, but has been relatively limited since then, with daily deaths falling to below 100.

Iran has not yet reported a case of the new Omicron variant, but health officials have warned that its entry into the country is highly likely.
