Police in Beijing have arrested Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu on suspicion of rape.

Wu’s arrest is Saturday after a 19-year-old student accused the singer of raping her on the date she was 17.

The allegation caused widespread condemnation of Wu on Chinese social media and led to several luxury brands closing deals with him. The 30-year-old star denies the allegations.

Beijing police said in a statement that Wu was being ‘criminally detained’ on the basis of rape “in response to relevant information reported on the internet”, including that he “repeatedly lured young women into sexual relations” .

The statement gave no further details.

The news of Wu’s arrest was the most popular topic on Weibo on Saturday night, and some online users commented on Wu’s social media account and told him, ‘Get out of China!’

According to police, Wu also has Canadian citizenship.

The official newspaper of the Communist Party, the People’s Daily, informed the matter and said in a short opinion post online: ‘Having a foreign nationality is not a protective talisman, and no matter how big the name is, there is no immunity. ”

Wu originally gained notoriety as a member of the K-pop boy band EXO, before leaving in 2014 to embark on a successful solo career as a singer, actor, model and judge of the variety shows.

The teenager revealed her accusations against him on social media last month and later in an interview with the internet portal NetEase.

According to the interview, she thought she was meeting Wu for a career opportunity. His staff present forced her to drink. As someone who did not go to pubs, she said her tolerance was low and she was drunk after two drinks. The next day, she woke up in Wu’s bed. That morning, he was kind to her and promised to take care of her, she said.

The teenager said it was the beginning of what she thought was their relationship. This was the case until March, when he stopped sending her messages back.

At first she said she felt sorry for herself. But after hearing that there are other women who have been treated the same, she said she feels there are others who have been worse off.

“I do not believe it is just my own personal matter. You could even say that this is a problem with the atmosphere in China’s entertainment industry, ‘she said in the NetEase interview.

Since her accusations, more people have spoken online and accused Wu’s staff of predatory behavior, such as inviting them to karaoke parties.

Brands, including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, L’Oreal Men and Porsche, suspended their partnerships with him last week due to the escalation.

Wu, who grew up between Vancouver and Guangzhou, denied all allegations of assault and maintained his innocence in several statements on social media.

The singer said on July 19 that he met the young woman on December 5, 2020, but ‘I did not force her to drink’ and ‘there were no such’ details ‘she described’.

“I have never forced women to have sex or ‘date rape’,” he wrote, adding that he does not sleep with underage girls.

Wu’s studio also published a lengthy response to a teenager’s allegations, denying he was guilty of the offense, alleging that she tried to blackmail his staff for millions of yuan and falsified her accusations.

When the allegations surfaced, the luxury firm Bulgari said it was “very important to the incident related to Kris Wu and decided to end all related cooperation with Wu from today”.

His lawyers are suing the teenager for libel.

The student said she was also taking legal action against Wu and said the star tried to buy her silence with 500,000 RMB ($ 77,100).
