It’s no mystery why the Democrats’ so-called transforming legislative program is the basis (Report, 2 October). In the 2020 election, the party with the smallest majority in a century emerged and the Senate could not be caught. And then there is the underlying reality that the US is a small-C conservative country, not a progressive country. Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are cautious for a reason.
There are two test questions for any elected leader: why did the voters vote for you and what is the scope of your mandate? President Joe Biden misread the reason for his victory, and he consequently failed the test. It was not an affirmative vote for him, much less for his party’s ambitious agenda. It was a personal rebuke to his predecessor, and much of it stems from the pandemic and the damage it caused. The policies of the previous administration have led to low inflation, full employment, secure borders and energy independence, and they enjoy broad support.
If the president and his team continue to deny these facts, I expect my country to enter a crisis in control, with all that entails.
