Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies (1930) involves some partying at No 10 and the defenestration of a prime minister (Person in the News, FT Weekend, January 22).

But even Waugh never thought to have his prime minister previously declare fancy dress balls illegal. It seems reality has trumped satire.
