The British Army must therefore change its recruitment targets to address the harmful parts of its male culture, commissioned by MPs (“UK Government and Generals criticized over efforts to combat harassment in the Army”, Report, FT.com8 November). How many of those MPs have any idea of the reality of fighting? I suggest they read Siegfried Sassoon‘s poem The kiss as a memory.
It’s been almost 40 years since I ordered my platoon to fix bayonets before I took Mount Longdon, in the Falklands War. We may not want to get involved in messy foreign entanglement, but we will surely be dragged into it again (Maybe Ukraine).
It will then be too late to find out we threw the baby out with the bathwater.
