Nigel Andrews compares the magnetic attraction of Bette Davis’ eyes to the Venus flycatcher (Life and art, FT weekend, July 24). In 1974, Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon reflected this trait in their composition “Bette Davis Eyes”. Recorded by Kim Carnes, it became an international hit in 1981. “She will tease you / She will unease you / Just to please you / She’s got Bette Davis eyes”.
