MI5 has gone public, claiming that Christine Lee, a British citizen, is an influencer on behalf of China (Report, 14 January).
Lee’s alleged pro-Beijing offenses are not considered criminal, but we are told that MI5 is investigating Beijing’s friends in Britain for any political interference activity. This is nothing less than McCarthyism.
Simply put, if you treat China as a competitor rather than a hostile state, you are disloyal. It was only a short time ago that a Tory prime minister invited Beijing to enter into an economic partnership with Britain.
But as soon as Washington started a cold war with China, we moved, as usual, quickly and thoughtlessly in line with Uncle Sam. We would have behaved like that even if Beijing had not accelerated its takeover of Hong Kong.
