The Welcoming Article by Camilla Cavendish (“It’s time to stand back and ask what GPs are for”, Opinion, 13 November) concludes that “we need them”.
Unfortunately, she left out the important point that the NHS has made us all beggars, in that we have to overcome the state-paid GP gatekeeper without any choice and be grateful for this mediocrity.
In that distorted sense, we do ‘need’ them, but not in the sense that they are invaluable in the current environment.
Perhaps a new model is being asked where they, as “community physicians” paid for by results, will regain their status based on excellence.
What brave government will tackle this?
