How strange that Charlie Porter should have written about caps (“Mantle and swagger”, Life & Arts, FT Weekend, December 24) when he clearly does not know how to wear one.

The lanyards of a cape are long because they are meant to cross the chest, make a turn around the back and be fastened at the front. It stabilizes the cape securely and prevents it from becoming a garrot when caught on something.
