It’s hard to find a successor in Andrew Douglass’ statements that form his tirade against the French for their complaint about the way their submarine contract with Australia was broken (Letters, 30 September). He ends his digging by saying that although Barack Obama refers to the French as “our oldest ally”, they are certainly not the most reliable.
Funny enough, this is exactly what the French of the Americans thought when President Obama, after warning Syria that the use of chemical weapons is a red line not to cross, did exactly nothing when it was crossed and left the French, who were ready to carry out an air strike with the Americans, high and dry.
