Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the VISION EQXX prototype, which he says can drive 1,000 km (621 miles) per charge.
Mercedes-Benz picked up its battery-powered VISION EQXX prototype on Monday, which it said would have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) per charge, which takes a big step in its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions. .
Daimler, which will soon be renamed Mercedes-Benz, announced plans in 2021 to invest more than 40 billion euros ($ 45 billion) by 2030 to tackle Tesla in a fully electric car market, including the construction of eight battery plants. From 2025, all of its new vehicle platforms will only make EVs, he said.
The VISION EQXX, dubbed as the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built, will have energy consumption of less than 10 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 km, Daimler said.
Tesla’s Model S 60 currently consumes 18.1 kWh over the same distance, data on its website shows.
“The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is how we envision the future of electric cars,” said Ola Kaellenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz.
Daimler will test the prototype on various types of site before the middle of the year, Markus Schaefer, chief technology officer (CTO), told reporters on Monday.
Some components of the prototype will be available in Mercedes-Benz vehicles within two to three years, Schaefer said. However, the CTO refused to specify when the 1,000km series battery would be market ready.
“We’ll probably be the first to show a 1,000km distance car in real life, with such a small battery,” Schaefer said.
When such a vehicle will be for sale is a “market decision” that must be determined once the automaker has determined how much range customers are expecting and what they will be willing to pay, he said.
The prototype, built within 18 months, “puts an end to distance anxiety,” Mercedes-Benz said, citing one of the main obstacles to why EVs are no longer in demand.
This required the development of a new battery pack, which the company said would fit in a compact vehicle and whose energy density – to measure how much power batteries can hold compared to their size – stands at almost 400 watt-hours per liter.
