Officials say nine children among the dead, dozens of other people injured in the fire in the Bronx neighborhood.

At least 19 people have been killed, including nine children, and dozens more injured in an apartment building fire in New York City, according to city officials and U.S. media.

New York Mayor Eric Adams has confirmed that 19 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx neighborhood around 11 a.m. Sunday.

“Right now we have 19 people who have been confirmed dead and we still have several who are in a critical condition,” Adams said in an interview with the American media network CNN.

Nine of the dead were children, the Associated Press reported, citing a city official.

More than five dozen people were injured and 13 people are still in critical condition in hospital, said Stefan Ringel, a senior adviser to Mayor Adams.

About 200 firefighters were dispatched to put out the blaze. The cause was not immediately known, the city’s fire commissioner, Daniel Nigro, told reporters.

“Members found victims on each floor in stairs and took them out in cardiac and respiratory arrest,” he said.

Nigro said the smoke spread to every floor of the building, probably because the door to the apartment where it started was left open, and that victims suffered from significant smoke inhalation.
