One of the best ways to learn is to study under someone who is already highly skilled, and when it comes to making it with Lego, official sets are a wealth of knowledge from some of the world’s most talented model makers. New Discovery of Lego space shuttle Not just a wonderfully detailed model, the build itself feels like a crash course in advanced building techniques.

One of the most popular Lego sets in the last five years (given the minimum number of times it is sold and hard to find in stock) Apollo Saturn V model: A huge tribute to one of mankind’s greatest achievements. What the Apollo program achieved was by no means spectacular, but it happened long before I was born. NASA as a child of the 80sIts space shuttle program captivated my imagination as much as it could have been flawed because it made space exploration feel closer to what science fiction said and what should happen.

NASA’s discovery of the space shuttle is the most famous of the five fully functional orbits Was built, and for more than 27 years it was used for 39 missions and spent almost the entire year in space during its entire operational service. It last landed on March 9, 2011 and was finally transferred to the Steven F. Udvar-Haji Center, the National Aircraft and Space Museum. Where it remains to this day. Of all the missions performed by Discovery, the most famous was the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit.

ThThis isn’t actually Lego’s first discovery set, but it’s the biggest replica to date, Clocking At 2,354 Pieces. This is also the first space shuttle discovery model to target old fans of the building toy: a demographic that Lego has been trying to pay more attention to in recent years with larger, more elaborate models.

The problem for older Lego fans is that we don’t necessarily have the time we need to create them – that’s why I choose carefully now and choose which set I will handle. The latest final Lego set I built is extremely satisfying Tim Burton Batmobile From a few years ago and even without the pop-up machine gun, the invention of the new Lego space shuttle provided exactly what I was looking for in a build.

The Lego includes three display stands that can be used to support the orbit of discovery, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the third makes the satellite float above the cargo bay in orbit.

The scale of the model is not so big and describes itself in detail Like a monstrous, irresistible build Which will occupy one end of your dining table during the week. The time I started scratching my Lego itch is over. The results make for a great display piece, especially since Lego includes a buildable display that allows you to dynamically navigate the orbit of the ship The Hubble Space Telescope model has been released from its cargo hold.

But as enjoyable as the final model, the real joy of creating the Lego Space Shuttle was all the clever building strategies I encountered while working through the Build and Instruction manual.

One of the features I was most interested in when I discovered the space shuttle was how the spring-loaded retractable landing gear process worked, and it didn’t disappoint.

One of them Features that have piqued my curiosity When it was first published There were spring-loaded retractable landing gears and how they were able to land quickly. When the gears are manually backed up and the shuttle’s fuselage is adjusted, they compress a set of three spring-loaded shock absorbers that are commonly seen. Lego’s larger sports car model. They remain compressed until they are hidden inside the discovery until a flap behind the shuttle activates a sliding mechanism that pushes the orbiter’s landing gear towards the position causing all the waterfalls to fall at the same time.

Turning one of the search engines results in the upper part of the orbit descending upwards and downwards using a clever mechanism inside.

The simple method of camouflage as the cause of the lift going up and down on each wing of the shawl is also surprisingly clever and it uses many parts which I already know in a new and interesting way.

A small part of the whole build that allows me to hang triangular plates in the down space in the opposite direction impresses me the most and reminds me why I will never be a professional Lego builder.

This may seem trivial but my favorite part of the Lego Space Shuttle Discovery build was this brilliant use of an inverted single stud clad piece to hold a small triangle plate in place upside down. Looked too much Complex and unnecessary at first, but when I flipped the whole orbiter and saw how this single small tile helped to polish the bottom of the model and make it look complete, exactly how it was a fun memorabilia Talented and wealthy Lego in-house builders.

The space shuttle discovery doesn’t use too many stickers, it gratefully comes with lots of pre-printed parts. But you have to apply 24 of these reflective decisions to the interior of Cargo Bay, which is as tedious as you can imagine.

There were a few parts of the build that weren’t quite enjoyable. The interior of the discovery cargo bays is lined with a reflective material so that 24 decals need to be applied strictly. The task at first seemed so overwhelming that I was tempted to skip it altogether. Hate Applied but) I was steady and the final results must add a more authentic feel to the model when the cargo bay door is wide. Given that these panels were given entirely new parts for the fully invented model, I hope Lego found a way to apply a reflective finish to the factory without relying on large sticker sheets.

Lego has already announced that it is moving away from manual manuals featuring black backgrounds, but not soon enough to avoid the discovery model.

My other complaint is with the instruction manual. The sets that Lego has been targeting for older manufacturers usually come in all black boxes with simple artwork. Photographs of complete models are limited. For whatever reason Lego also carried this instruction in the instruction manuals, each page has a model set against a black background that is very confusing and sensitive to flashing, often making it difficult to determine where the piece should go. This is a problem that Lego has already addressed with an announcement that it has moved away from the manual with a black background, but unfortunately this is not the time for discovery.

The final results are part of a great display and the added bits of functionality make for a really enjoyable build.

I’m not going to pretend that the discovery of the new Lego space shuttle is cheap by any means. 200 Its per-piece price point is more expensive than in 1989 Tim Burton Batmobile, But that’s why Lego isn’t marketing this model at 6-R-Elders who will accidentally take it down from a flight of stairs. This is for adults who will enjoy spending the night after collecting plastic bricks at night rather than dining in fancy restaurants. If you taught us something last year, It gives our brains maximum peace and joy and this set provides just that by looking at this model sitting under a frame picture of discovery on my desk.
