Although the FCC did not know exactly how many emergency calls were affected due to some overlapping problems, it did record thousands of problems.
More than 23,000 calls have suffered a “complete” failure, with the FCC saying the same amount of location data was not included. Roughly 20,000 more callback data were not included. Disruption begins when a leased fiber link on a T-Mobile network becomes distorted and a single-location routing error exacerbates the crisis. T-Mobile also had trouble accessing fiber links remotely.
This is not the first time that T-Mobile has dealt with the 911 disruption. It was set at 2014 17.5 million for failure in 2014.
We asked T-Mobile for a comment. The FCC said the career answered outage-related questions in a “timely” fashion, however, so it was not a hotly debated issue. Not that the company was likely to fight against a settlement that would not significantly affect its finances. And like it or not, it won’t do much to help people who haven’t been able to get full help in times of crisis.
