The Federal Communications Commission is expected to retain the next U.S. regulatory body More responsible for data breaches. The requirements will also cancel a mandatory one-week waiting period to notify customers. In the meantime, carriers must report violations to the FCC in addition to the FBI and the Secret Service.
Rosenwarsell argued that stricter rules were necessary for the “evolving nature” of the violations and the risks they posed to victims. People should be protected against larger and more frequent incidents, the FCC chair said – meaning regulations need to be taken into account.
The FCC did not say when the proposal would be put to a vote, although the next open meeting of the FCC was scheduled for January 27. There is no guarantee that the Commission will greenlight the new requirements. However, it will not be a surprise if the rules are formulated. While companies are now more likely to report breaches, there have been multiple high-profile incidents where those companies have taken too long to alert customers or Didn’t inform them at all. Newer systems can reduce that waiting time, giving people a better chance of securing their data and preventing fraud.
