So what was the assignment that led you to tell a Noir story on a Twitter thread?
The assignment was to create an interactive narrative that lives on a social media platform and post it within a week. Each of us was asked to consider the capabilities of each particular platform as well as the population and how difficult it is to “go viral”. How do you attract visitors in the first post? What is your call to action? Can you gain an existing online community? What is your “higher idea”? How does a mechanic work with or against the story?
Does everyone use Twitter?
Some of my classmates are making comics, tick videos or Instagram posts. Several students are also using Twitter but are publishing their descriptions in real time based on audience engagement (e.g. using polls and observing answers). It was an explosion to watch.
What was the inspiration for the story itself? Why not a metaverse noir?
A lot of times when we talk about the virtual world, we imagine a cartoon or cyberpunk aesthetic. I wanted to do something that was more unexpected and vice versa, as well as giving the audience a compelling reason to read. One of the topics we discussed in class was allowing players to feel that they could “touch the story” and framing a murder mystery seemed appropriate.
What is the challenge of telling such stories on Twitter?
There is not much room for subtlety in 280 characters. So Professor McHugh’s advice was to make sure that each individual tweet felt like it could be interesting on its own or provide enough conspiracy that someone might be forced to explore further. I knew I could use existing film and TV archetypes and troupes to create the world I wanted and help the player fill in the blanks. I am a huge fan of such shows Laws and orders, And I immediately found a “dead avatar” zeroing in on a character as a way to stop someone as soon as possible. This usually occurs within the first five minutes of the criminal procedure.
Yours Last work Focused on VR / AR. Doing a bit of an exit from a Twitter thread?
Part of the course approach is to ensure that students can learn to adapt to future formats and platforms. We don’t know what the next gaming console or social media platform will look like, so we want to be prepared to deal with anything.
Do you think all the metavers are buzzing বিশেষ especially coming out of the staff Facebook– Right now?
I’m fascinated by the amount of resources that Facebook wants to put into the “Metaverse Project”, as well as their position on cross-compatibility – ensuring that users can access it via mobile devices or PCs or the web.
But as intelligent as I have mentioned, Ready Player One And Snow crash Quite a terrible dystopian future; I don’t really want to be in any of that world. Heck, I’m not sure I created the world I want to live in. Fiction is not meant to be an instructional manual, above all. And I hate Metavers — whatever it is হওয়া being controlled by a single company.
