Not to downplay these guys efforts, but as a machinist I can’t imagine it’s very hard to match the technology of a film camera. Film has to move from reel to reel while passing across the image plane from the lens which isn’t hard to reverse engineer from other film cameras.

The most expensive parts of shooting film is the film and the most expensive part about shooting anything is the lenses. So long as light goes in through a lens and hits film at the right place, it doesn’t really matter what the camera is constructed from.
