TikTok is testing a “repost” button on its app that allows users to quickly reshape a clip with their followers. The new feature, which the company described as a preliminary test, is not yet available to everyone, although it seems to be cropping up for several users over the past few days.
A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement, “Currently, we’re experimenting with a new way for people to share their enjoyable TikTok videos.” The feature appears as a yellow “repost” button, along with the app’s other sharing features. TechCrunch Report A reposting a clip that won’t reveal your profile will push the video into your friends’ “for you” feed. You can also add a short comment that will appear with the clip so your friends can see “why you reposted this video.”
Although TikTok users have long been known for constantly remixing and reshaping each other’s clips, the repost button is the first time the app has found something like a retweet – the ability to quickly reshare a video from your feed. As TechCrunch Notably, TikTok may be wary of this feature because easily recycling posts can contaminate users’ “for you” feeds, known as hyper-personalized.
This may be due to the fact that the company is restricting the visibility of re-posting to friends who follow each other, at least for the time being.
