Toyota BZ4X BEV Concept SUV Auto started turning heads during its debut in Shanghai earlier this year and its journey to the United States has begun. The driver confirmed yesterday that the idea is that the car has officially landed at its Plasno, Texas headquarters and that it plans to start selling the angular crossover in the United States next year. (Hopefully it gets the name Tongue Twister-Y as soon as it gets here))
Lisa Materazzo, VP of Toyota Marketing, said, “The size of the RAV4 is roughly the same as the versatility of being different from other RAVs. It will be in a good position in the sweet spot of the market,” In a press release.
When you consider that Toyota regularly sells over 400,000 RAV4s in the United States each year, it’s no surprise that automaker BZX BVO is expected to do almost as well here. That said, there are some key design differences that give the BZ4X a more spacious, free-flowing feel – for example, the instrument cluster is set farther back from the steering wheel than most vehicles, and it’s larger in size – a simple infotainment display and control cluster. The look isn’t as minimal as you’ve found, say, a Tesla, but it’s quite a bit smoother than the interior of the 2021 RAV4.
That clean, open cabin sits at the top of the company’s new e-TNGA platform, built to partner with Subaru – contributing its expertise to the Toyota EV, and Subaru applying a substantial knowledge of its 4WD. (Not surprisingly, Subaru plans to ship an electric SUV of his own called Saltera based on the same structure.)
As Toyota pointed out in 2019, the e-TNGA platform was designed as modular: the front and rear motors are positioned, such as the width of the battery and the position of the driver with the front wheels, but “wheelbase, number of batteries installed, overhangs and more.” Components can be changed. “Unfortunately, Toyota has not said much publicly about how fast its first e-TNGA EV can go, so we’ll have to wait before the carmaker chats a bit.
