UN says they have submitted a request to Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry to release those detained in Addis Ababa immediately.

At least nine United Nations staff members and their dependents have been detained in the Ethiopian capital, the world body said.

A UN spokesman said on Tuesday that the UN had submitted a request to Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry to release those detained in Addis Ababa immediately.

UN security officials visited the detained staff, the spokesman added.

At the end of September, the Ethiopian government, which had been fighting forces from the northern Tigrayan region for a year, ordered the eviction of seven senior UN officials from the country for “interference” in its internal affairs.
