Over the years, Microsoft has Cheap Windows laptops pushed As the standard school computer. They can do what a comparable Chromebook can do with running traditional Windows software. But now, Microsoft is finally ready to jump on the bandwagon of affordable, kid-friendly PCs. 249 Surface Laptop SE. It is one of the first PCs to run Windows 11 SE, a stripe down OS that targets K-8 students (and their distressed teachers). You can expect to see Windows 11 SE devices coming from other PC manufacturers including Dell, HP, Acer and ASUS.

Microsoft hasn’t had the best luck with the Windows variant for years: Windows 10 S There was a faint attempt to provide a simpler experience for the original Surface laptop, while dual-screen focusing Windows 10X Was Finally canceled. (Windows 11 Originally from the ashes of Windows 10 X.) But according to Aaron Woodman, Microsoft’s general manager of Windows, this latest OS is more focused on solving a specific problem: How can Microsoft create the ideal OS experience for students and teachers?

Windows 11 SE tries to do this by focusing on simplicity. There is no Microsoft Store to install apps (although IT departments can install Win32 and Universal apps as they wish). It has been optimized to run on slow hardware. And Microsoft has even snatched window snapping options by allowing apps to stay on the left or right side of the screen. One of the best parts of Windows 11 is the simple way you can easily move an app to different corners of your screen, but it’s probably too complicated for early school-age kids to run a notebook with a small screen.

The Surface Laptop SE is similarly basic in design. It’s a notebook with a plastic shell that vaguely resembles the Surface laptop line, especially the previous cheap entry, 549 Go to the Surface Laptop. It has an 11.6-inch TFT LCD screen with a 1,366 by 768 resolution – one step above 720p, but below the laptop Go’s sub-1080p display. And don’t expect any strong gear under the hood, as the Surface Laptop SE is limited to dual-core Celeron chips (either N4020 or N4120) and 4GB or 8GB RAM. For storage, there is a choice between a 64GB or 128GB eMMC card.

But really, what else do you expect for a starting price of 249? The more interesting thing about the Surface Laptop SE is the more premium components that have yet to find their way. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go comes with a nice keyboard and trackpad, as well as its easy-to-open lid, Woodman told us. The laptop SE also plays a 720p webcam, which is sharper than what we see in similarly priced notebooks. And, judging from a short video video chat I had with Dave Alles, general manager of the Surface Laptop SE, the quality of its camera and microphone is also quite impressive. (It was easily better than the $ 1,200 laptop I reviewed.)

For the most part, the Surface Laptop SE seems to be more than enough for a typical grade-school kid. It weighs 2.45 pounds, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to carry around in small backpacks. And its onboard storage, no matter how low, should be enough to make Microsoft Office projects work offline. Microsoft claims that it will get 16 hours of battery life with “normal device usage”. Woodman tells us that the designers had students in their minds without reliable internet access. They can download school assignments, work on them at home, and automatically synchronize their work when they return to class.

IT departments will probably appreciate the easily accessible screws at the bottom, which make it easy to open and repair notebooks on site. The low cost of laptop SEs should make it easier for schools to get enough units for each student instead of sharing a handful of PCs in the classroom.

I’m interested to see how well Windows 11 SE performs on laptop SE’s slow hardware. And a part of me wonders if giving kids a more limited version of Windows will impair their ability to tinker with PCs when they grow up. But as a former IT support jockey, the Surface Laptop SE seems like a cheap notebook I’ve always wanted for grade-school students. Sure, it’s not as flexible 400 Surface Go3, But not so much for basic coursework. And when I liked Go to the Surface Laptop, It starts $ 549াইSo schools can buy two laptop SEs at almost the same price

At the moment, Microsoft only plans to sell Laptop SEs to schools through education resellers later this year. Ordinary consumers and businesses will not be able to order them. But if it succeeds, I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft finds a way to bring this cheap computer to the public.
