The alarming figures came on Thursday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi received his second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

“Vaccination is one of our few ways to defeat the virus. If you qualify for the vaccine, shoot your shot soon,” Modi tweeted. He received his first shot of the vaccine on March 2.

India launched its vaccination campaign in January. So far, more than 90 million health workers and people over the age of 45 have received at least one shot.

India has received only 11 million both doses as it tries to build immunity to protect its 1.3 billion people.
